Choose from over 2,500 AA Quality Assured Accomodation establishments at www.aatravel.co.za
How can you, the holidaymaker or business traveller, ensure that the accommodation you choose is up to standard and that the service you are provided with is outstanding? How do you know that you will receive good value for money? How do you know where to go and which establishment to choose?
AA Travel Guides has the solution - the AA Quality Assured Accommodation (AAQAA) programme. Only establishments that conduct their business according to the highest professional standards are awarded membership in this programme. AAQAA establishments also benefit from the endorsement of one of the strongest, most credible brands in the world – the trusted Automobile Association (AA).
Properties are inspected annually by a small, dedicated team of discerning assessors who judge the property from the guests’ perspective. (Is the service friendly and professional? Is the property presenting itself accurately to potential guests? Were the guests’ expectations met?) Establishments which satisfy the minimum requirements of the AAQAA programme are endorsed as AA Recommended, the next level up is AA Highly Recommended, and establishments which are pristine and top of the range are endorsed as AA Superior.
The AAQAA programme has been operating since 2000 and it boasts more than 2,500 members. Properties range from modest B&Bs and guest houses to game reserves and caravan parks, selfcatering cottages and family hotels to top luxury resorts. An AAQAA endorsed establishment provides happy holidaymakers and satisfied business travellers with peace of mind when selecting lodgings for their long-awaited holidays or business trips.
Eastern Cape and Free State
The Eastern Cape and Free State provinces of South Africa, two
totally different yet equally beautiful regions, are home to a wide
array of amazing attractions that’ll entice, excite, and enthral both
local and international travellers.
The Eastern Cape boasts beautiful beaches, rushing rivers, majestic mountains, the gorgeous Eastern Cape Garden Route, and, we’re happy to say, a multitude of marvellous AA Quality Assured Accommodation (AAQAA) options.
Addo Afrique, an exclusive AA Superior lodge superbly situated roughly 70km from Port Elizabeth and overlooking the Addo Elephant National Park, offers guests a luxurious and positively stunning base from which to explore the surrounding untamed African landscape. The Addo Elephant National Park is the only game reserve in the world in which guests can enjoy sightings of the 'Big 7' (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, great white shark, and southern right whale).
Every aspect of the AA Superior Tenahead Mountain Lodge & Spa, a magnificent mountain retreat located in Rhodes in the Eastern Cape, is geared towards absolute relaxation. The cool summers are perfect for quiet walks in the fresh mountain air with pretty panoramas on offer at every turn, while the sometimes snowy winters inspire one to sit back and relax or snuggle up in front of a cosy fireplace.
The Free State, with its picturesque plains, stunning savannah, and beautiful African sunsets, has no shortage of fantastic AAQAA establishments.
The Rosendal Country Retreat, located in the tranquil town of Rosendal, only three hours’ drive from Johannesburg, is a splendid AA Highly Recommended establishment that offers only the very best of South African country living, complete with hearty home cooking and hiking, adventure sports, horse riding, and picnicking opportunities aplenty.
The Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve, situated between Ficksburg and Rosendal at the foot of the Witteberg mountain range, offers outstanding AA Highly Recommended accommodation in a peaceful environment in which guests can enjoy fascinating game drives, leisurely strolls (on foot or on horseback), or horsedrawn cart rides through exquisite valleys. The 300 odd wild horses galloping gleefully through the lovely countryside is truly a spectacular sight, not often matched anywhere else in the world.
Bonsela programme
The programme has been designed to incorporate three major
brands within the travel industry, covering accommodation, air
and road travel.
AA Quality Assured accommodation offers the traveller total peace of mind when selecting where to stay, and empowers the traveller to make wise choices when they travel.
AA Quality Assured establishments benefit from the inspection by highly qualified assessors inspecting their establishments annually, in order that the endorsement issued is both meaningful to the establishment and most importantly meets or exceeds the guest’s expectations.
AA Travel Guides has put together a programme which will see participating establishments from their vast national client pool offering varied discounts ranging from 10% upwards on accommodation (other services may be included too in some cases).

With the local wine industry currently facing various challenges on the local and international fronts, the Northern Cape’s Orange River Cellars is set for further growth and is keenly optimistic about its future.
Speaking at a recent Farmer's Day in Keimoes, attended by Orange River Cellars’ producers, CEO Herman Cruywagen said the company’s commitment to unlocking value for its grape producers serves as the primary motivation factor for driving profits.
"We have come a long way since 2001 when our Cellar found itself facing a fork in the road," Cruywagen said. "Despite being founded in 1965, our wine production needed a serious infrastructural and capital injection to meet the challenges of the modern markets. Our producers, constituting more than 900 grape farmers, understood this and gave us the green light for expansion and striking out towards becoming a more focused producer of quality wines."
Reaping the fruits of the vine
The new direction included appointing a team of
viticulturalists tasked with guiding the grape producers
towards market-orientated production. This has led
to, among other things, the planting of new varieties
and premium vineyard selections farmed for specific
wine lots.
"The main goal is to ensure the financial security of the farmers along the Orange River,” Cruywagen said. “To do this meant producing quality wine at all costs, which is impossible without producer buy-in. By rewarding the producer for his efforts, a healthy and strong winery has been created, braced for further expansion into various wine markets."
Cruywagen said that, although the new direction meant a paradigm shift away from an emphasis on volume production, Orange River Cellars’ trump card remains the fact that it is able to produce large volumes of wines of high quality at competitive prices.
Orange River Cellars’ proactive marketing teams have made tremendous inroads in new local and international markets over the past two years, with success in the local market leading the way.
Also speaking at the Farmer's Day, Matthee van Schalkwyk, Head of Production at Orange River Cellars, said that the team of winemakers also deserve special mention. "We have five wineries: Keimoes, Kakamas, Upington, Grootdrink and Groblershoop - and to have such exceptionally talented and enthusiastic winemakers at each cellar is truly a blessing," he said. The 2011 harvest was remembered for all the wrong reasons due to the Orange River floods causing havoc in the middle of the harvest. "Still, we have produced the best Chenin Blanc in our history, under the trying conditions that were nothing short of a natural disaster. This says a lot about the dedication of our human capital."
